How Carotenoids Function in a Healthy Macula

The macula is an ovular pigment around the center of the retina. It colored yellow by the presence of macular pigment which is composed of three xanthophyll carotenoids: lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Because of this yellow tint, the macula is able to absorb excess blue and ultraviolet light that enters the eye. Its function is similar to that of a natural sunblock for the inner eye.

Studies have shown that the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin support the macula against various forms of degeneration. These carotenoids function as antioxidants and support the macula against damage by photo-initiated oxidative stress. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are all present naturally within the eye, however their density tends to reduce with advanced age.1

The Importance of Supplementing for Carotenoids

Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) is a measurement of the lutein and zeanxanthin in the macular region. As of late, MPOD has been used as a biomarker for evaluating current and projected visual function. People of advanced ages often suffer losses in their ability to convert lutein into meso-zeaxanthin within the macula. This reduction can trigger an imbalance of MPOD and many even spell potential damage to the macular region in people of advanced age.

Eating vegetables rich in lutein and zeaxanthin can aid the maintenance of structural integrity within the macula. However, since meso-zeaxanthin is not part of the typical diet, it cannot be ingested except in supplement form. The MacuGuard Ocular Support formula supplies a necessary dose of all three carotenoids in order to support improved vision, now and into the future. It also includes saffron because of its carotenoid content. Crocin and crocetin are both carotenoids contained in saffron that have shown positive support of retinal cells, helping to restore the functionality and structural integrity of retinal cells which have been damaged by oxidative stress in age-related macular degeneration.2

With a special combination of ingredients, MacuGuard Ocular Support with Saffron, Zeaxanthin, Lutein, C3G, and Meso-Zeaxanthin is a breakthrough in nutritional eye health support.
