The Importance of Carotenoids in a Healthy Macular Region

The macular region is an ovular pigment near the center of the retina. It is yellow in color due to the presence of macular pigment, composed of three xanthophyll carotenoids: lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. The yellow tint provided by these carotenoids is what enables the macular region to absorb excess blue and ultraviolet light that enter the eye. It functions similarly to a natural sunblock for the inner eye.

There is evidence that the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin support the pigmented region from some types of macular degeneration. These carotenoids act as antioxidants and support the macula against damage by photo-initiated oxidative stress. Unfortunately, the density of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin within the eye declines naturally over time.1

Maintaining Carotenoid Levels within a Natural Range

The amount of lutein and zeaxanthin in the macular region of the retina is measured as macular pigment optical density (MPOD). Recently, MPOD has become a useful biomarker for determining current and projected visual function. Some aging people suffer losses in their ability to convert lutein into meso-zeaxanthin within the macula. This reduction can trigger an imbalance of MPOD and spell potential damage to the macular region in people of advanced age.

Eating vegetables which contain lutein and zeaxanthin can help maintain the structural integrity of the macula. However, since meso-zeaxanthin is not part of the typical diet, it cannot be ingested except in supplement form. The MacuGuard Ocular Support formula supplies potent doses of all three carotenoids to support better immediate and long-term eye health. Saffron is also included due to its carotenoid content. Crocin and crocetin are both carotenoids found in saffron which have displayed potential to support retinal cells that have been damaged by oxidative stress in age-related macular degeneration. This formula also contains an additional carotenoid, astaxanthin, to help fight against eye fatigue.2

With a special combination of ingredients, MacuGuard Ocular Support with Saffron and Astaxanthin, Zeaxanthin, Lutein, C3G, and Meso-Zeaxanthin is a breakthrough in nutritional eye health support.
